Shillong, March 23: UDP legislator from Shillong West, Paul Lyngdoh today took up the issue of iccessibility of government officers to media persons.

Raising the issue during the Question Hour today, Lyngdoh lamented the absence of a government spokesperson to interact on its behalf.

According to him, a government spokesperson was necessary in the modern age of governce where the buzz word is transparency, accessibility and accountability.

“Recently there were reports of media seeking information from government departments but most officers shut their doors and did not share any information,” Lyngdoh said. In his reply, Information and Public Relations Minister AL Hek said that the Government has not appointed any spokesperson to interact with the media.

According to Hek, Principal Secretaries or Commissioner Secretaries in charge of specific departments have been entrusted to share information with the media.

Meanwhile, Lyngdoh urged the government to appoint a spokesperson while adding that the sharing of information should not depend on the whims and fancies of particular officers.
