PDF delegation meets new State governor

SHILLONG, Feb 24: A delegation of the People Democratic Forum (PDF) led by CEM P N Syiem today visited the Raj Bhavan welcoming the new governor of Meghalaya while also stressing on the need to speed up the process in giving his assent on the pending bills of the Council.

Speaking to reporters after meeting the governor, Syiem said, “There are around 1o Bills of the Council which is still waiting to get assent from the governor for the past 1 to 3 years now hence in our meeting today we have sought his intervention to speed up the process.”

The bills includes the Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Constitution of Council of Traditiol Dorbar) Bill 2016, the Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Conservation and Promotion of Khasi Social Customs and Traditions) Bill 2016, the Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Nomition and Election of the Syiem, Deputy Syiem, the United Khasi Jaintia Hills Autonomous District (Magement and Control of Forest) (Sixth Amendment) Bill 2016, beside other bills.

Syiem informed that the delegation has also suggested the governor to coordite with the state government with an aim to fast-track the approval of the pending Council Bills.

It may be reminded that last month Governor of Assam Banwarilal Purohit assumed additiol charge of Meghalaya, after V Shanmugathan resigned from his office after nearly 100 members of his staff alleged in a letter to Prime Minister rendra Modi that he had “compromised the dignity” of the Governor’s House and turned it into a “young ladies club”.
