SHILLONG, March 12: The newly formed people’s Democratic Alliance (PDF) at the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) seems to have reconciled with the reality that members will have to sit in the opposition bench. This was made clear by the PDF leader Pynshngain N Syiem during an interaction with The Sentinel on Thursday, even as he added that the Congress led alliance foresee the regiol alliance crumbling under its own weight.

One of the founding members of the PDF Grace Kharpuri rejoined the All Regiol Party Alliance (ARPA) along with David Sylliang, an Independent MDC. This gave the beleaguered ARPA a space to rejuvete by having wafer edge majority in the house of thirty. ARPA has also elected a new parliamentary party (PP) leader in Metbah Lyngdoh

The Congress led PDF which received a shot in the arm with the defection of three ARPA members last week. Suddenly it found its quest for the reigns in the KHADC diminished after Kharpuri and Sylliang were found in the ARPA camp.

The PDF Parliamentary Party (PP) leader of the PDF, Pynshngain N Syiem told this correspondent on Thursday, “Going by the present strength of our members, we will be content to play the role of an effective opposition”.

Disclosing that the two MDCs-Grace Kharpuri and David Sylliang have not intimated the PDF leadership about their change of allegiance, Syiem said, “ As it is, the Congress party has never shown any inclition to destabilize the four regiol party alliance”.

“It’s the dissension and infighting amongst themselves (ARPA) that prompted our party to look out for an altertive to stabilize governce in the KHADC”, stated Pynshngain  N Syiem who had earlier held the post of the Chief Executive Member (CEM) for three and a half years.

ARPA leadership said that the old problems have been resolved. “We have the 16 members to continue with our ruling in the KHADC”, stated ARPA leader KP Pangniang while informing that all the constituents of the ARPA have unimously accepted Metbah Lyngdoh as the CEM desigte.
