PDS rice sold in open market, FIR lodged against agent

TANGLA, October 18: An agent of fair price shop of Sopani village under Panery PS in Udalguri district had to face the wrath of villagers when the PDS priority scheme rice meant to be distributed to the villagers was sold in the open market.

Reportedly, Gokul Deka, the agent of the fair price shop, sold 50 kg PDS rice to one Jabla Boro whereas he was entitled to only 35 kg rice. The villagers, getting suspicious, interrogated Jabla and learnt that the agent had sold the additiol 15 kg rice to him at a higher price in the open market. The irate villagers handed over the rice and Jabla Boro to Panery PS.

On behalf of the villagers, Dharma Das also lodged an FIR against the accused agent, Gokul Deka. The Panery Police registered an FIR vide case no. 66/16 against the agent accusing him of selling PDS rice in open market.

Talking to this correspondent, Panery PS OC Sohrab Ali said, “We have registered the FIR and are investigating the matter.” Meanwhile, the accused agent Gokul Deka has been issued notice to appear before the Panery Police within a time period of seven days. The local villagers also accused the agent of selling fair price shop goods in the black market for long, and thereby amassing uccounted wealth.

The villagers have demanded cancellation of the fair price shop license of the accused. Now what step does the police and Bhergaon Food Civil Supply and Consumer Affair Department adopt will be something to watch out for.
