People of Mawlai oppose MUDA building bye-laws

SHILLONG, Aug 11: The MDC from Mawlai Constituency P.T. Sawkmie after a meeting with the local residents of Mawlai today under one voice have decided to oppose the decision of MUDA to expand its jurisdiction towards Mawlai and other Scheduled areas of the State.

During the meeting they requested Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh to immediately remove the Notification and the Master Plan which aims to include all the Scheduled areas under the Jurisdiction of MUDA.

“As a representative of the people of Mawlai Constituency I would like to appeal to the Minister concern that she should remove this problem which will affect the people,” Sawkmei said.

He also informed that people from his constituency from time to time use to complain to him that they have finished constructing their houses but they are not getting electricity from MeECL reason being that they don’t have the building permission from MUDA.

“There are many finished houses in Mawlai but because of the building bye-laws set by MUDA the people are suffering since even for electricity they need to submit the building permission which should be acquired from MUDA,” Sawkmei said.

He stated that the Master Plan goes against the people residing in Scheduled Area and that MUDA should not encroach into these areas.

“Any Act which the state government agrees upon should be for the welfare and benefit of the people, however this Act imposed by MUDA is an anti peoples act,” Sawkmei said.
