From a Correspondent

JORHAT, Dec 3: “Sukapha showed us the way and was only the leader who dreamt of building Bor Asom (Greater Assam) in 1228 A.D,” said Hitendra th Goswami, the Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly, during an earthen lamp lighting function on the bank of the historic Rajmao Pukhuri (pond) on the occasion of Sukapha Divas, organized by Jorhat Municipality Board and Rajmao Pukhuti Suraksha Samiti, where a total of 5,000 earthen lights were lit on Saturday.

The Speaker said, “During my recent visit to US I witnessed many working diplomats, scientists, engineers and doctors from the Northeast and they were all found to be in a cluster, in one place living with brotherhood because they are all from the Northeast, which also proves the preaching of Chaulung Sukapha who tried to unite several ethnic tribes, especially from the north-eastern States.”

Asom Divas was celebrated at Sukapha Samany Khetra, which was organized by Jorhat district Tai Ahom Students’ Union in collaboration with the Department of Cultural Affairs, Government of Assam, and also it was observed in Dakhin Jorhat Tai Kala Kristi Sanskriti and Gabekho Anbusthan and at Jaya Bhavan where various Tai scholars gathered and recalled the great leader and discussed about his teachings.
