Physician fined for torturing minor domestic help

HOWRAGHAT, July 15: A government MBBS doctor has been fined Rs 55,000 for allegedly torturing a domestic help, a minor girl, here on Friday at Diphu in Karbi Anglong.

Sources said Dr Sarsing Enghi, who is working as physician at Den Arong Mini Primary Health Centre (MPHC) at Diphu engaged a 12-year-old minor girl as domestic help at his house.

The girl was engaged at doctor’s house on May 13 last on the basis of agreement made with her parents to provide Rs.3000 per month as wage. But since last July 9 both the doctor and his wife allegedly started torturing her physical for some pity mistakes.

Bering uble to tolerate the physical violence, she fled from the doctor’s residence and took shelter a nearby residence of one siram Rongpi. When the whole incident came to light next morning, local people assembled and later called for Samili’s parents. Immediately a meeting was called in connection with the incident.

Besides, under the Karbi social custom Dr. Enghi was also fined Rs.5000 with three bottles of arak (liquor) because of he was found guilty under the Karbi traditiol customary law.

According to allegation of the victim, she was badly beaten up. Several injury marks were found on her body.
