Pick-pockets on rise at Iewduh market

SHILLONG, June 19: In wake of the growing number of pickpocket cases at Iewduh market, Myntri  Hima Mylliem, C Kharkongor on Sunday informed that the matter will be taken up for discussion during the Executive Dorbar meeting of the Hima.

“There has been many complaints from the general public on this issue and I have decided to take up this issue during the Executive Dorbar scheduled to take place this week,”  Kharkongor told newsmen here on Sunday.

When asked if the Hima has any proposal to set up CCTV cameras at the market to tackle the problem, he said, “As of right now, there is no such proposal to set up CCTV cameras at the market but there is a need to coordite with the police department on this matter.” Meanwhile, SP (City) Vivek Syiem said, “We have arrested so many people when it comes to pickpocket cases but the problem is that the miscreants get bail and again go back to anti-social activities. There is a need to rehabilitate them and engage in doing something.”

He informed that the police have also deployed personnel to patrol the market to check to check such incidents.

He called for awareness among the public. “We can set up CCTV cameras in different places but the market is under the jurisdiction of Hima Mylliem, so it is up to them to come up with a proposal,” the police officer said.
