PIL on tree felling

 From A Correspondent

Shillong, Sept 6: The Meghalaya High Court on Wednesday heard the PIL related to tree felling. During the hearing, an affidavit of the Divisiol Forest Officer (DFO), Khasi Hills (T) Division, Shillong was filed. During the course of submissions, when the High Court tried to enquire about the expertise available with the Government of Meghalaya in its Forest Department, the response from the DFO and the government advocate has, prima facie, given an impression that engagement of some experts is essential so as to regulate the entire process concerning the trees in and around the city of Shillong, which is the first issue in this petition.
In continuation of the submissions made on the last date, petitioner Kaustav Paul submitted that he has conferred with some experts working with the Botanical Survey of India, North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) and Agro-Forestry, ICAR, who have expressed willingness to take up the tasks assigned to them in relation to this matter.
Petitioner Paul further submitted that he would request at least two of the experts to remain present before the court on Thursday.
It may be mentioned that during the last hearing on Monday, the petitioner submitted that certain experts who could specify the age and strength of a tree are available with the Botanical Survey of India as also with the NEHU.
