From a Correspondent
JOYSAGAR, Feb 27: Piyali Barua and Maniram Dewan were remembered in Sivasagar on Sunday on their death anniversary. After the controversial Yandaboo Pact (1826) during the Ahom reign, Piyali Barua and Maniram Dewan started a revolution against the British rulers for an independent Assam. But they were successful and were captured by the British Army. They were hanged by the colonial rulers on February 26, 1858. To remember the sacrifice made by the martyrs for their motherland, various meetings were held in Sivasagar Swahid Uddyan and Charing Public Hall. In the morning an environment protection programme was held followed by swahid tarpan, lighting of lamps and recitation of patriotic songs. Painting, speech and poem recitation competitions were also held among school students.
