Plea Filed in Supreme Court to Hold the Deportation of Rohingya Refugees

A plea to pass a restraint order on the deportation of the seven Rohingya refugees is filed by advocate Prashant Bhushan in the Supreme Court on Wednesday. As reported, the Rohingya refugees are lodged in the Silchar Detention centre in Assam and are scheduled to be deported to Myanmar on October 3 and 4.

"Pass an order restraining the Union of India from taking any step towards the deportations of Rohingya refugees lodged in jails or detention centres in any part of the country in contravention of non-derogable principles of customary international laws and during the pendency of the case before this court."

The plea for urgent hearing on the case is mentioned before a bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi. Bhushan told the bench that if these refugees are deported, there are risks of persecution and even death of them. The plea states that the Assam government has plans of deporting seven Rohingya refugees back to Myanmar on October 3 and 4.

Before this as well, a batch of pleas was filed by two Rohingya immigrants -- Mohammad Salimullah and Mohammad Shaqir who in their plea mentioned that they took refuge in India after escaping from Myanmar. They have mentioned it that the widespread discrimination, violence, and bloodshed against the community in that country compelled them to take refuge in India.

The Supreme Court will be hearing the case on Thursday.
