Plea for utilization of Binkandie water bodies

  SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT

SILCHAR, July 25: Binkandie haor (big water body cum low lying area) is one of the biggest water-bodies in Barak Valley which falls under Binkandie development block in the Lakhipur sub division of Cachar. It is surrounded by a number of villages adjacent to the haor area among which Gosai gar, Krish gar, Rongthol and Kalapool fall. The area is predomintly inhabited by cultivators and fishermen who are completely dependent on the haor and its land for their livelihood.  There has been a long standing demand for implementation of irrigation scheme in the haor area for facilitating rabi crops that include winter season vegetables of all kinds and boro paddy cultivation. In fact, boro paddy cultivation covers the paddy cultivation of winter and spring season. Ultimately, a small scheme was undertaken an about 1000 bighas of land were brought under irrigation facility that resulted in huge amount of paddy and vegetables production which continues till date.

In view of the success of the small scheme, the people of the areas have been demanding implementation of a bigger irrigation scheme to bring under its cover 6000 bighas of more land. On the subject, series of memorandum were submitted to the authorities concerned but with no result so far. All that happened was certain correspondences, of course, officially. The much desired scheme has never received any serious attention. Nor has there been any sanction which would make the area of grary of Cachar district as a whole and benefit more than a thousand families of farmers.

In view of the importance of the scheme, the people under the banner of Lakhipur Anchalik Unyan Sangsha headed by Anil Chandra Das Talukdar, president, in a representation recently to Ranjit Dutta, Minister of Irrigation, Handloom and Textiles and Sericulture, have impressed upon him for proper utilization of the water and land resource and bring prosperity to the farmer families. It is with great hope and confidence that the people look forward to a positive response and their expectations which were belied during the Congress regime are now high from the Sonowal Government.
