Police distribute stickers to Shillong cabs

SHILLONG, Nov 2: The Shillong Police has distributed 10,000 stickers to local taxis and other commercial vehicles as part of its implementation of Sections 102 and 110 of Meghalaya Police Act, 2010 in the city that deals with littering.

Speaking to reporters, East Khasi Hills district Superintendent of Police (SP) Davis N Marak said that as part of effective implementation of the Act, the Shillong Police has registered 91 cases against violators under Sections 102 and 110 of the Meghalaya Police Act since 1st January up to 31st October.

He further said that during the same period, around 247 individuals were apprehended and 25 cases were disposed off by the court and 32 persons convicted.

While the remaining cases are still pending in the courts, the fine collected during this period was Rs 1 lakh.

“In pursuance of Section 101 of the Act, we have also distributed stickers and pamphlets to various shops, tourist vehicles etc.,” the SP said, adding that in the past couple of months the police have conducted various awareness programmes on the issue of littering.

“The pamphlets that we are distributing are in English, but soon we will be distributing pamphlets in Khasi, Garo and Hindi,” he said.

Referring to the Whatsapp group for sharing of photos and information for better coordition between the police and Shillong Municipal Board, Marak said, “Through the Whatsapp group, the police have maged to take action again a few people involved in littering.”
