Police launches search operation at Prabhat Kalita’s residence, seizes documents

JORHAT, Dec 22: Jorhat Police launched a search operation in General Classes Development Council (GCDC) chairman Prabhat Kalita’s residence at Bohotia Gaon located on the outskirts of Jorhat town on Thursday.

Police seized a large number of documents, including list of beneficiaries in different schemes implemented under the council. A police officer engaged in the operation said, “We have seized list of beneficiaries in different schemes implemented under the council, mes and address of the Self-Help Groups (SHG) and  detailed records, funds details sanctioned for the SHGs and some other documents in presence of Kalita from his office-cum-residence.”

Kalita was arrested by police from a private lodge in Delhi on Tuesday night and produced before a local court here on Wednesday. The court sent him for five days police remand. Kalita is a prime accused of the alleged corruption of more than Rs.1 crore GCDC fund along with Golaghat district Development Commissioner and ADC Anjav Chaliha who was arrested by police on November 12 from Golaghat Circuit House and is now in judicial custody. Police had also taken him for two days remand and he confessed about the misappropriation of GCDC fund with the help of council chairman Kalita before police.

Kalita was absconding since the arrest of Golaghat ADC Chaliha. Jorhat Deputy Commissioner Virendra Mittal lodged a written complaint before police against Kalita and Chaliha and a case was registered at Jorhat police station against the duo.
