Police officer 'refuses' to register molestation case

A Correspondent

JOYSAGAR, March 30: At a time when the Chief Minister has directed all Deputy Commissioners and Superintendents of Police to ensure the safety of women in the State, an ASI of Joysagar police station in Sivasagar district allegedly refused to register a molestation case recently. This has evoked sharp criticism from various quarters.

A girl was allegedly molested by two miscreants on Wednesday evening in front of her father when the father and daughter were coming back from the market in the Talatal Ghar road area. The miscreants also allegedly clicked a photo of the girl with a mobile phone and when the girl’s father opposed, they threatened to kill him.  The girl and her father then went to the Joysagar police station and lodged an FIR the same evening. The FIR was received by the accused ASI at that time. The ASI of Joysagar police station gathered information about the identity and address of the miscreants from the complaint and after that he called the youth but instead of registering a case against the youth, the ASI allegedly took about Rs 45,000 from the youth and did not register any case. Conscious people and women organizations of Joysagar and Sivasagar have urged the Sivasagar Superintendent of Police to take strict action against the alleged ASI of Joysagar police station.
