Police to beef up security to ensure safe New Year celebration

Shillong, Dec 29: Meghalaya police have cautioned the revelers in Shillong city to celebrate the advent of the New Year without causing annoyance to others.

Shillong, though known for its attraction to locals and tourist alike has had its own bad episodes of street fights and accidents due to drunken driving.

Last year, the entire resources of the police were placed in all the arterial points of the city to check public nuisance. It yielded results as minimal cases were reported from the entire city.

East Khasi Hills District Police has decided to replicate the same this time also to ensure a nuisance-free New year celebration.

“Besides the deployment of armed security personnel to deter drunken driving, our intention is to ensure a jamboree free from all troubles”, Superintendent of Police (City) Vivek Syiem told The Sentinel.  “The section 110 of the Meghalya Police Act will be used to il anyone who is causing public annoyance, disturbance”, stated Syiem adding that any act that is detrimental to the public celebration will not be tolerated. Apart from the security personnel, the CCTV installed in all vintage points is expected to add to the merits of the security monitoring mechanism.
