Poll preparation gathers momentum in Khumtai

GOLAGHAT, February 4: With just two months left for the Assembly polls in Assam, all the major political parties in the state including Asom Ga Parishad (AGP), Bharatiya Jata Party (BJP), AIUDF and Congress are busying getting their election act in Khumtai constituency.  

State Cultural Affairs minister and sitting MLA Bismita Gogoi, who was elected from the Khumtai constituency in 2011 assembly poll as a Congress candidate by a securing a huge number of votes, has been considered as the strong contender in the seat this time also.

The members of Mohila Congress, Youth Congress and NSUI have arranged several mass rallies in the constituencies to garner support for Gogoi during the last few months.

On the other hand, BJP youth leader Mril Saikia, Dharmendra Koushik, Prab Gogoi and Dr Mridul Kumar Dutta, who are seeking ticket from the BJP, have also started their political activities to woo the voters of the LAC. In AGP, however, except former cabinet minister Probin Gogoi’s wife Upasa Gogoi, no leaders have sought ticket from the party.

The grass root workers of the AGP have supported Gogoi’s candidature from the constituency.

The AIUDF party also for the frits time planned to field candidate in the seat. Sources close to the party revealed that youth leaders Sahjahan Ali and Arif Ali have sought ticket from the party and started their activities.

Sources said there are no other ticket seekers in the Congress party and candidature of Bismita Gogoi is confirmed. However, intra-party conflict has started in BJP in the constituency as several leaders have sought ticket from the constituency. Even though, a large number of youths have joined the party, the interl conflict over party ticket might affect the prospect of the BJP.
