Poll scenario heats up in Lakhimpur, 12 candidates file nomination for forthcoming elections

LAKHIMPUR: On the last day of nomination filing on Monday for the first phase of the ensuing general election, the poll scenario of Lakhimpur parliamentary constituency heated up.

On the final day, a total of 10 candidates representing various political parties along with independent candidates filed their nomination. One among them was sitting BJP MP Pradan Baruah who filed his nomination to Returning Officer and Lakhimpur DC Dr. Jeevan B. He was accompanied by Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, State Finance Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, P&RD Minister Naba Kumar Doley and many BJP MLAs such as Dr. Ranoj Kumar Pegu, Bhuban Pegu and Binod Hazarika, amidst the enthusiasm of a huge gathering of the party activists.

Advocate Arup Kalita filed his nomination as Communist Party of India candidate. On the other hand, Amiya Kumar Hundique filed his nomination as Communist Party of India (Marxist) candidate. The party activists took out a rally in Lakhimpur town shouting slogans against the Modi-led BJP government.

The other candidates who filed their nomination for Lakhimpur HPC on the final day are- Anup Pratim Borboruah of Nationalist Congress Party, Dilip Moran of Asom Dristi Party, Moulana Ubaidur Rahman Kasimi of Asom Jana Morcha, Bhupen Narah of Voters’ Party International, Purna Kanta Deori of Jimochayan (Deori) People’s Party, independent candidates Prabhu Lal Vishnava and Ambaz Uddin. Anil Borgohain of Congress and Hema Kanta Miri of SUCI filed their nominations on March 20 and March 22 respectively for the No. 14 Lakhimpur HPC. A total of 12 candidates filed their nominations.
