Poor condition of Mahmora Rural Library dismays readers

FROM A CORRESPONDENT

MAHMORA, March 12: The conscious people and the readers have expressed serious concern over the deplorable conditions of Mahmora Borbeel Rural Library located at Borbeel under Saraideu subdivision in Sivasagar district.

Local people said that the basic problem with the library here is that of building. "Even after 16 years of its establishment, the library does not have an own building even today.  Besides this , the infrastructure of the library is so poor that even adequate number of almirahs are also not there to keep the books. Not only that, there is no table and chairs for the readers," said Debojit Borgohain , a regular reader of the library.

He said that the library is not spacious. "If a library is not spacious enough, the very purpose of setting up a library, which is meant to motivate people to reading and studying, is defeated," he said. Another major problem in the libraries here was dearth of permanent staff members, he said.  The library, which came into existence in 1988, contains several thousand books on different topics, including old volumes of jourls.

A staff member of the library said that earlier Sivasagar District Library had supplied some books every but from last year the authorities of the district library has stopped supplying the books to the library.

"Not only that they have also stopped supplying the newspapers, magazines and jourls to our library now," he said.
