Poor quality of construction works irks residents

Special Correspondent

SILCHAR, Dec 3: If it is a state government construction of any building, the general perception is that it will be of poor quality and the use of materials substandard. This is what the people of Kachudaram village panchayat have to complain about the construction of building in the District Industries Centre (DIC) campus. In a representation to the additiol deputy commissioner of Cachar, development, Mizanur Rahman Laskar, former president of the Kachudaram GP, submitted recently, it has been pointed out that the ongoing construction of building in the DIC campus has not been in compliance with the specified standard of work.

Since the department concern is of greater public interest as a whole and involves money of the common people, it is imperative that the additiol deputy commissioner should make an on the spot examition of the construction and take measures in order to ensure that the work is done on the basis of quality and sustaibility. The DIC building is being constructed for multipurpose utility to the people as a part of the social and economic obligation of the government towards them.

The representation while expressing surprise at the way the construction is being carried on without any monitoring by the higher authorities concerned has at the same time brought to the fore that everything is kept in the dark. It appears as if it is a private construction. Neither any signboard has been put up indicating the details of the project nor is any information given about the estimated cost and the target date for completion. There is no information about the person who has been allotted the work order.

A verification and assessment by the residents of the area reveals low quality of work and equally substandard materials being used. Moreover, no attention is being given to the most important aspect of sustaibility. It has been claimed that the spot visit will also show how substandard materials are being used and samples about them can be collected to know the truth. Mizanur Rahman Laskar, on behalf of the people, stated in view of the seriousness of the matter, the additiol deputy commissioner should himself visit the spot and ascertain the reality.   The representation has been fortified with photographs of the ongoing construction which speak for themselves. It has been impressed upon the authority concerned of the development wing of district administration to stop the ongoing construction and also to siege the inferior materials.
