Poor road conditions in Silchar, residents suffer

FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT

SILCHAR, April 21: Elections are over and the season of promises has also gone with the wind. Quite alarming are the road conditions of this town and the denizens are perplexed. All political parties and leaders are now busy with calculations. The worst sufferers are the tax payers. The condition of roads across the town is so bad that in this rainy and stormy season their normal life and movement have become quite distressing.

A proper means of communication, transportation and other facilities are necessary for development. This town has nothing to boast of since development is a misnomer. Good communication alone can lead to better way of living. This poor and deplorable condition of roads is in glaring contrast to the malls, shopping complexes, pizza hut, branded and jewellery shops. In addition to that, intertiol fast food outlets like Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) and Domini’s Pizzas have found a place in the posh Goldighi mall.

Still, development is a far cry from making this town a better one. Barring these stylish and sophisticated modern symbolism, there is nothing to cheer about. There are three agencies like Silchar Development Authority, Silchar Municipal Board and the Town and Country Planning Department which are to work in a coordited manner to make this town a better place to live. Most of the areas of the town get submerged during rains. There is nothing like draige system. Not only the roads, but the highways that crisscross this town are also in bad shape.

Residents of areas like Rangirkhari, Link Road, Malugram, Rongpur and Bilpar have to bear with all the trials and tribulation due to road conditions. The roads are not only full of potholes but also remain stagted in water. This has also caused serious problem for the vehicle users, riders, pedestrians as well as is telling heavily on traffic movement. Rickshaw pullers who pull their three wheelers have the worst experiences. So are the passengers who have to sustain the continuous jerks. The conditions will further worsen if the stormy rainy season continues.
