Posthumous win for gunned down Khonsa MLA Tirong Aboh who defeated his BJP counterpart

Itanagar: National People’s Party (NPP) candidate from Khonsa West Assembly constituency Tirong Aboh who was gunned down along with ten others at 12 mile area in Tirap district by suspected NSCN militants, retained the seat by defeating his lone rival Phawang Lowang of the BJP by 1,055 votes.

Aboh, who was elected from the constituency during 2014 as a People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA) candidate, though provided a succour to the NPP, who had set its foot in the state’s electoral scene for the first time, but in a temporary manner as the Election Commission of India would soon announce the seat as vacant and would go for by-poll.

Aboh was on his way to Khonsa from Dibrugarh on May 21 last when suspected NSCN militants opened fire on his convoy consisting four vehicles, killing him along with his son and nine others including two police personnel on the spot at around 11.30 AM.

Deputy Chief Electoral Officer Liken Koyu informed that the Election Commission of India had to declare the seat and announce bye-election to be conducted within six months as per the Commission’s guidelines.
