SARUPATHAR: Road connectivity is provided through National Highway- 39 and now recently the NH-39 has been converted to Asian Highway- 1 (AH-1). The AH-1 is the longest route of the Asian Highway Network (AHW). The main Siliguri corridor in West Bengal with a width of 21 to 40 km (13 to 25 mi) connects the north-eastern region with east India.

Potholes have developed on NH-39/AH-1 near the wildlife sanctuary of Garampani. The Sentinel had earlier highlighted and pointed out the pathetic condition of the NH-39/AH-1 road. Though the NH-39/AH-1 road was repaired in Karbi-Anglong district, in Golaghat district the potholes developed in some parts of the NH-39/AH-1. The wildlife sanctuary and NH-39/AH-1 are divided into two districts - one part is in Karbi Anglong district and another is in Golaghat district - and due to such big potholes many accidents takes place in Garampani Wildlife Sanctuary and Nambor Wildlife Sanctuary.

The local people along with the activists of Satra Mukti Sangram Samiti from Golaghat district had complained earlier and now they have threatened that unless the Assam Government repaired the road immediately, the SMSS and local public would stage road blockades in NH-39/AH-1. Many truck and bus drivers had several times demanded that the potholes should be filled up soon to avoid more accidents. The pothole deaths have stirred a debate on the inefficiency and corruption of the PWD and other authorities concerned.
