Power surplus tion, yet millions without electricity'

Shillong, Sept 5: Union Secretary of Bureau of Energy Efficiency Pankaj Kumar said that India is a power surplus tion, but yet millions of households are without electricity. Speaking at a conference organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) on “Energizing North East” here on Tuesday, Kumar said “It’s an intriguing fact that we are generating surplus power, but many Indian households are still without power connection, and this is an issue that we need to tackle.” He also underscored on how to re-energize renewal energy from the rich resources of the north-eastern region. “The challenge per se for the country, including the Northeast, is not about power generation, but to ensure reach of electricity to each household through efficient and clean manner that conserves energy, and hence can be considered renewable,” he stated. The Union Secretary said the energy saving codes will soon come into play where government agencies concern will have to be consulted while designing buildings. In course of his speech, Meghalaya Power Minister Comingone Ymbon, who too was present, said the State has a long way to go in terms of self-sufficiency in power generation in spite of having many power stations.
