SHILLONG, June 2: A pregnt women died allegedly after doctors and staff of the CHC at Ummulong in Jaintia Hills refused to treat her.

The woman has been identified as Klotilda Suting (31), daughter of Plorinda Suting of Thadmusem village.

The incident took place on May 19 when Klotilda’s heath suddenly deteriorated, apparently because of blood deficiency. She was rushed to the CHC but the doctors and staffs refused to admit her claiming that they do not have any equipment.

Addressing newsmen on Tuesday, mother of the deceased, flanked by witnesses and also a leader of MPUF, said that Klotilda lost her life because the doctor and nurse present at the CHC at Ummulong did not help.

Dr. Marshall Lamare of the CHC also did not issue a letter of reference so that the patient could be taken to another hospital, neither there was any 108 ambulance service available, president of Meghalaya People United Front (MPUF) Dapoiwanmi Laloo said.

Klotilda was then taken to the residence of one Elda Suting who helped her deliver the baby. The family members requested the doctor to pay a visit to the house where Klotilda was kept but he refused to help, he said.

Klotilda died after delivering the baby.

He also informed that Dr Lamare is not regular at the CHC and is preoccupied in his private clinic in Ummulong.

The MPUF has demanded action against the medical staff and compensating to the victim’s family.

It also questioned the government as to why it had set up a CHC which does not have any equipment or a labour room and not even an ambulance.
