SHILLONG, Nov 6: Two pressure groups from Jaiñtia Hills- Hynniewtrep tiol Youth Front (HNYF) and Jaiñtia tiol Volunteer (JNV) have demanded a CBI probe into the death of a person in Jowai police station a couple of months back.

“We want a CBI inquiry into the death of Cleophas Nongkhlaw in the Jowai police station,” Wanbun M Dkhar, president of the HNYF West Jaiñtia Zone said today.

Today, the HNYF and JNV submitted a memorandum to the Home Minister in this regard.

According to Dkhar, though a magisterial inquiry was ordered into the incident they were however not satisfied with it since government probe are always doubtful.

“The magisterial probe had stated that there was a procedural lapse on the part of the police who were on duty that day,” Dkhar added. According to the pressure groups the enquiry report was submitted to the government in the month of October. It may be reminded, Nongkhlaw (32) was found dead inside the lock-up of Jowai Police Station in Meghalaya’s West Jaintia Hills district. Nongkhlaw allegedly committed suicide using his vest inside the lock-up of Jowai Police Station.

Hailing from Iawmusiang locality in the district headquarters, Nongkhlaw was arrested on July 30 on the charge of burglary and was in police remand.

According to reports police had said that when the accused was found hanging, his wife was present at the police station.

Nongkhlaw had been arrested on several occasions in the past, police said.
