PRI members stage dhar

From our Correspondent

MANGALDAI, Nov 30: In protest against the alleged ignorance and negligence of the State Government towards the three-tier Panchayati Raj institutions formed through election with a view to decentralize the power to the grassroots level, the elected  members of the Panchayat bodies of Darrang district on Wednesday staged a dhar in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office here in Mangaldai.

A large number of members from Gaon Panchayat, Anchalik Panchayat and Zila Parishad of the district took part in the dhar and submitted a charter of demands before the government through the Deputy Commissioner. The charter of demands included delegation of power of subjects under 29 government departments to PRIs as declared in clause 11 of Section 243 (G) of the Constitution of India, release of fund under various rural development schemes, release of the long-pending monthly remunerations of the PRI members, among others. Earlier, the agitating PRI members assembled in the campus of Darrang Zila Parishad and marched towards the office of the Deputy Commission in a large procession.

A total of 914 members have been elected under the Panchayat Raj system from Gaon Panchayat members, Gaon Panchayat president, Anchalik Panchayat member to Zila Parishad member, in the district. However, most of the PRIs of the district, including the Zila Parishad, have been occupied by the Congress or the AIUDF.
