Prices jacked up following rockslides in Manipur

FROM OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT

IMPHAL, Aug 22: Prices of all commodities in general and consumer items in particular have been jacked up by the unscrupulous traders taking undue advantage of the rockslides and wobbly bridges along the Dimapur-Imphal and Jiribam-Imphal tiol Highways.

Over 100 metre of rockslide was reported at Peshema near Dimapur in galand spping all transportations. For decades this has been a weak spot and almost every rainy season saw rockslides there. One inter state bus from Imphal had been dragged down the gorge along with the rockslide. However there was no casualty since the driver and the passengers were rescued immediately. Though the BRTF is working to clear the debris it is feared that it will take few weeks and till the works are completed all truck and bus services shall be suspended.

The Jiribam-Imphal highway is also the second lifeline of the state.

However some weeks ago one bridge breached on one side and one loaded truck remained banked. After this incident loaded trucks are not allowed to cross the bridge which means that nothing can be brought to Manipur from Assam through this highway.

It may be mentioned that due to tension in Moreh, consumer items from Myanmar has also failed to reach Imphal.
