Private Tuition Issue Gets Messier At Melaghar In Sipahijala District of Agartala

Agartala: The issue of private tuition by government school teachers has turned into a bone of contention between the educated unemployed youths and the guardians of the students appearing for board examinations. The issue reached new heights at Melaghar in Sipahijala district as both the sides launched campaigns in support of their stand.

Now, all government teachers have stopped giving private tuitions allegedly due to threats from some unknown quarters. It has left the students and the guardians totally in a lurch.

What makes the thing worst is that there is no authority to take up the matter. Despite the threat, the teachers are not in a position to file any complaints with the police as it will expose the fact that they were giving tuitions illegally. The guardians went to the Municipal Council but they also refused to intervene as it is beyond their jurisdiction and advised the guardians to settle the matter amicably.

While the unemployed youths have decided not to allow government teachers to do private tuitions, the other side, specially the guardians of the students, are backing the government teachers.

The guardians on Wednesday held a meeting in the courtyard of a local temple and demanded that the government school teachers must be allowed to continue with their private tuition. “If the government teachers stop giving tuitions at this stage it will be a disaster for the children”, said one guardian.

As per service rules, the government teachers are barred from giving private tuitions. During the previous Left Front government, the Education Department on several occasions has taken initiatives to refrain government teachers from giving private tuitions but failed in this regard as the guardians were in favour of the teachers. The educated unemployed youth’s argument is that the government teachers are getting dignified salaries and by giving private tuitions, are making an ‘illegal earning’.
