Probe into death of under trial prisoner - 23 Jan, 2016

GUWAHATI, June 22: In sync with the directive issued by Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) to the Kamrup (M) district administration, the latter to ordered an inquiry into the death of an under trial prisoner, Pabitra Sonowal.

Sonowal died in the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on November  20, 2015 after he had been admitted to the hospital on November 18, 2015. He was an under trial prisoner.

AHRC had on June 4, 2016 asked the Kamrup (M) District Magistrate to conduct  an inquiry into the death of the under trial prisoner.

The DC today asked Chandrapur Revenue Circle Officer and Kamrup Metro District Executive Magistrate Deepmala Gowala to inquire into the circumstances leading to the death of Sonowal. The inquiry officer has been asked to submit the report within 15 days from today so as to submit the report to the AHRC within the stipulated time.
