Tezpur, Nov 14: The All Assam Trained Home Guard Association (AATHGA) submitted a memorandum signed by Tankeswar Borah, president, and Numel th, secretary, to the Deputy Commissioner of Sonitpur as well as the Vice-Chancellor of Tezpur University, Additiol SP, Sonitpur and students’ union of Tezpur University, demanding investigation into the alleged molestation of a student of Tezpur University (TU) at the appropriate level.

A chaotic situation took place in the university campus on the night of November 5 after a home guard, identified as Bhadia Das, was accused of molesting a female student during the annual festival Techxetra. Following a complaint of the Registrar, TU against Bhadia Das, Tezpur Police registered a case bearing No. u/s 354 of IPC of 2278/17 and arrested the accused. He was later sent to jail.

The All Assam Trained Home Guard Association stated in the memorandum, “Bhadia Das was innocent in this case. During interrogation he said that during the Techxetra event, he noticed that the girl was sitting at a secluded place with a boy and he requested the girl to go to her hostel by pulling her hand. We suspect it to be conspiracy against Bhadia Das.”

It further stated, “Rajiv th and Krishkanta th were also present with Bhadia Das during the time of the incident but surprisingly they were not considered for giving witness in the case. Our association strongly demands proper investigation so that justice may be meted out to Bhadia Das and failing to deliver legitimate justice, the association will take the path of agitation, including pen down.”

Besides, a case has been lodged by the Tezpur Police Station against some of the students on charges of vandalizing public property and obstructing public servants from carrying out their duty on the night of November 5 in the premises of the university and for confining the police for nearly six hours while they were taking the accused to the police station in the vehicle.

A police personnel of Borghtat police station had lodged an FIR at Tezpur Police Station against the students who turned violent and also assaulted police officials as well as damaged vehicles at the time of the apprehension of the accused. A case had been registered under section IPC 342,353,294,506 and PPD Act of 2277/17 at Tezpur Police Station.
