Prominent citizen Madanlal Khaitan breathes his last

Golaghat, February 8: One of the leading citizens of Golaghat as well as political , social and cultural activist, Madanlal Khaitan breathed his last after prolonged illness at his residence in Golaghat on Monday.

Born on May 30, 1929, Madanlal Khaitan completed his BA degree with Honours in Assamese from Debraj Roy College in Golaghat as a first batch student. He then engaged himself in the family business. Madanlal Khaitan was a multi-talented person. He showed his talent in the field of literature, culture and sports.  He translated the famous Assamese play Maniram Dewan from Assamese to Hindi which was unveiled by the then President of Asom Sahitya Sabha Dr Bhupen Hazarika. He also played the lead role in the play several times on stage.

Madanlal Khaitan was elected as a member for the Golaghat Municipal Board for the maximum time. Later on September 10, 1959, he was elected as the chairman of Golaghat Municipal Board. He was also associated with several organizations of Golaghat. He was the founder general secretary of United Chamber of Commerce Golaghat and lifetime member of Amateur Theater Society, Axam Xahitya Xabha, ISCKON and other such organizations. He was also the governing body member of several educatiol institutions in Golaghat.

He served for the greater interest of the society and the deprived masses. His death has been widely mourned. His last rites will be performed on Tuesday. The UCCG and Assam Chamber have jointly decided to close the market from 1 pm to 4 pm tomorrow as a mark of respect to the departed soul.
