Prominent Marxist leader passes away

Doomdooma, Dec 3: Prominent Marxist leader and former MLA Bipin Hazarika breathed his last at his residence at Kaliapani, Doomdooma on Sunday due to heart failure. He was 81 and is survived by two sons and a daughter. His wife Amiya Hazarika, retired Headmistress, Doomdooma Girls’ High School, predeceased him about a year back. After graduating from JB College, Jorhat in Science, he worked for sometime as a teacher in galand and then came to Doomdooma to work permanently as Science teacher at Doomdooma Girls’ High School from 1964 to 1977. He was imprisoned for 19 months during Emergency declared in 1975.

He was elected general secretary of the JB College students’ body, Jorhat and there he came in contact with veteran political leaders like DulalChandra Barua. Hazarika was closely associated with the peasant movement of the State and was instrumental in rehabilitating many landless cultivators family in Mechaki Reserved Forest near Kakapathar in 1969. Similarly, he helped the people of Bijay gar area in nearby Rupaisiding to get land allotment during late 60s. Such was the impact of this peasant upsurge that even Peking Radio broadcast this incident as an important political event.

He was elected MLA, Sadiya Legislative Assembly Constituency, in 1978 during the Golap Borbora ministry and was a member of the State committee of Communist Party of India (Marxist), besides being the secretary of Kishan Sabha, State committee. His death has cast a pall of gloom and has been widely mourned by many organizations. As per his wish, his body was doted to Assam Medical College and Hospital, Dibrugarh through Ellora Bigyan Mancha for medical research and his eyes were also doted  to Tinsukia Eye Bank on Sunday.
