Protest against Citizenship (Amendment) Bill continues

A Correspondent

Dibrugarh, June 7: Dibrugarh District Students’ Union, in association with Journalists’ Association, District Sahitya Sabha, Karamachari Parishad, Senior Citizens, Women Organisations, many indigenous groups and students, took out a high-octane rally in opposition to Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016. Participated by hundreds of agitators, the procession which walked through the town left an impression on the onlookers’ minds.

Decided well in advance, the rally was marked with several slogans decrying the proposed bill including “Bangladeshi, Go Back!” In a statement released by the organisation, serious concerns have been voiced with respect to the bill, for it seeks to render the backbreaking efforts that went into framing the Assam Accord useless. It has also been clearly stated that the state simply can’t shoulder the burden of the illegal Bangladeshi immigrants who had entered the borders of Assam after March 24, 1971 – the cut-off date agreed in the Assam Accord.
