Protest against illegal trade in molasses

GOLAGHAT, July 5: The activists of Mod Mukta Asom Dabi Samiti along with Brihattar Asomiya Yuba Mancha of Golaghat district committee staged a two hour sit-in protest near the Deputy Commissioner’s office on Thursday against the illegal business of molasses in various locations of Golaghat district. The activists shouted various slogans against the department concerned as well as district administration for failing to stop illegal business of molasses in the district.

The Mod Mukta Asom Dabi Samiti central committee president Prabin Das said that a large section of dishonest businessmen run the illegal business of molasses and in various villages, some businessmen sell illegal liquor. He alleged that a large quantity of molasses imported to Assam from other States was mainly used for preparing local wine (sulai).

The organizations demanded a ban on molasses imported from other States and appealed to the government to help the sugarcane farmers of Assam. Further, they demanded strict implementation of the Excise Amendment Act, 2018. Later a memorandum copy was sent the Chief Minister through the Deputy Commissioner of Golaghat.
