Protest continues against Baghbor MLA Sherman Ali

FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT

SIVASAGAR, August 30: Along with rest of the State, work in all land and revenue department offices in Sivasagar district too came to a halt for the second day on Tuesday following a three-day cease work call given by the All Assam Mandal Kangu Sanmilani, demanding action against Baghbor MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed, who allegedly abused and assaulted a revenue department employee in Barpeta district in lower Assam last month.

The Sanmilani has threatened to undertake a series of protests, including launching an indefinite strike from next month, if Ahmed is not arrested and disqualified from the Assembly.

According to allegation, the Congress MLA had hurled verbal abuses at Md. Nurul Islam and also assaulted and threatened him before a crowd on July 30 when Ahmed visited Kismat Mayanbari riverbank to take stock of the flood relief measures.

Demanding the government to take immediate action against Ahmed in the case, the Sivasagar district unit of the AAMKS stated that if their demands were not met in the next few days they would launch a five-day cease work from September 6. The association would resort to another cease work for an indefinite period from September 14, the Sanmilani added.
