Protest march against rape & murder in J&K

Shillong, April 26: In the Khasi culture it is said that women are the centre of the society and men surround them to protect them and elders extend support. To remind the society of the same, the male students and faculty members of Martin Luther Christian University took a stand condemning the heinous crime leading to the death of Asifa Bano, an eight year old, who was gang raped and murdered in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Gender Initiative Committee of the Martin Luther Christian University, Shillong today  organised a silent march that started from the University Campus in Nongrah and ended at the Don Bosco Square,  Laitumkhrah in the city.

The university has deemed it crucial to come forward and raise voices for all mothers, daughters and sisters.

Speaking at the end of the march,  Russell Warjri,  faculty member, MLCU, said that the alarming rate at which women and children are being sexually abused and molested in the State on a regular basis should make the men in the society ashamed.  Warjri urged the men of the State and the country to take steps to ensure the safety and well being of every female in the country.
