Protest rally against rape of minor

Hojai, Dec 19: A protest rally was held on Friday against the alleged rape of a minor girl at Mandap (Kheroni) in the newly created district of West Karbi Anglong.

The rally was organized jointly by seven different organizations of the Karbi Anglong district. The rally took place at 11 am morning from Kheroni Chariali to Kheronighat police. At Gandhividyapith ME School in Kheroni Chariali, people from different organizations, local residents and Mahila Samity gathered at school play ground premises and the rally started from Kheroni Chariali.

A memorandum was submitted to the Deputy Commissioner of Karbi Anglong through the Kheroni Police Station officer-in-charge. The organizations demanded that the culprit should be hanged and the victim should get fincial assistance. All the activists who took part in the rally covered their mouths with black cloth as a mark of protest.  

The incident happened on December 6 at Mandap (Bagishadubi).The girl was intercepted by the accused when she was going to the weekly market at Mandap.  She was allegedly raped in a sugarcane field and then left there. When the victim told her guardians about the incident, a case was registered against the accused (136/15 u/s -376(2) (1)407 of Indian Pel Code R/W Section 4 of Protection of Child from Sexual offence (POCSO) Act. Raju Das (22) of Bamungaon Pipalpukhri under Lanka Police station in Hojai district was arrested in this connection by the Kheroni police and sent to Hamren jail.
