Protesters stage road blockade, demand completion of key Bongaigaon road

From our Correspondent

Bongaigaon, May 16:  In the Bakhalgaon area of Bongaigaon district, thousands of people came out on the street and blocked the Bongaigaon –North Salmara connecting Bir Chilaray Road, which is also a part of the proposed Chapaguri-Abhayapuri-Hajo-Agiyathuri State Highway, on Tuesday.

Arun Ray, a local resident, said that this road had been proposed as State Highway during the tenure of the previous Congress government in Assam. “Former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi had laid the foundation stone of this road during his tenure and since then construction of this road is going on by a construction company called Anupam Construction. But we have noticed that since the last few months, the construction work of this portion has stopped for unknown reasons. The road is now in deplorable condition and the people who have to use this road daily are suffering. We demand immediate completion of construction of this road as this is the main road to connect Bongaigaon town with other places of North Salmara subdivision, including Abhayapuri town and Goalpara and Dhubri districts.
