Protests in Chirang after Man with Genuine Documents sent to Detention Camp

Guwahati: At a time when the final draft of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) is approaching its final stages, massive protests erupted in Assam’s Chirang District after a person identified as Aanabala Rai who was sent to a detention camp. Rai who was suspected to be an illegal immigrant was sent to the detention camp for further investigation on June 23 and has been kept under detention since then.

An irked mob of the Koch Rajbanshi community people to strongly protested in front of Deputy Commissioner’s office in support of Aanabala Rai, who they claimed was innocent and has valid Indian documents.

The angry protestors said that the administration has illegally detained Rai, even after he produced all genuine required documents for NRC verification. Meanwhile, following the huge protests, Chirang Foreigners Tribunal (FT) body finally gave the release orders after proper verification and directed the concerned authorities to set Rai free.
