Protests over AIIMS: MLAs fail to convince agitators

FROM A CORRESPONDENT

GAON (HAIBORGAON), July 1: The four BJP MLA’s attempt to pacify the residents of Raha, who have been staging protest for last five days against the proposed establishment of All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) at Changsari near Guwahati, went in vain as the protesters refused to withdraw their agitation.

Even though the four MLAs requested the protests to lift their strike, they refused to do so and urged Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonuwal to visit the site along with Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The protesters said that if the government is sincere with the issue, the Chief Minister will talk to them.

They said that health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma alone would never be able to solve the problem; rather it would go beyond solution.

Speaking to reporters here the team of MLAs comprising of Tapan Gogoi, Rupak Sarma, Ritupar Borua and Dimbeswar Das stated, “We want to solve the matter through discussion. Discussion is the only way to solve the problem.” The team of MLAs appealed to the general public of the district to co-operate with the government with a positive mind and assured that the government would give priority to the demands of the people of gaon.

They said that Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma would visit the demonstration site in gaon on Saturday.
