From a Correspondent

Sivasagar, March 6: Twenty three different organizations have been protesting against the closing of the GAIL unit in Lakua in Sivasagar. At Sivsagar tyamandir, a protest meeting was organized today, under initiative of Gail Mazdoor Sangha, which was presided over by Tai Ahom Youth Association’s district president Hemanta Changmai. Bhairav Munda of Ahom Se, district secretary of Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangha, AAMSU’s Abedur Rehman, Dipali Phookan of People’s Council for Peace and Development, and various other representatives took part in the meeting.

The president of the Gail Mazdoor Sangha recalled how the GAIL had closed its LPG unit on January 15 last, without any intimation, which resulted in severe protests from different organizations.

Bhairav Munda of Ahom Se said that Jorhat MP Kamakhya Prasad Tassa was not paying attention to the welfare of the people of Assam even though he is a member of a standing committee of the Petroleum Ministry.

At the meeting, the participants discussed how the closure of the unit will impact the Northeastern region of India. It was also decided that the protests will be intensified if a solution is not found at the meeting between the Sivasagar DC and the protesters.
