PSG beat Montpellier to move atop Ligue 1

Paris, April 23: Edinson Cavani’s 31st league goal of the season earned defending champions Paris Saint-Germain a 2-0 home win against Montpellier, sending the club to the top of Ligue 1 table past Moco, who have two more games in hand. It was also Cavani’s 44th goal in all competitions this season. The Uruguayan striker put Blaise Matuidi’s left-flank cross into the net at the 29th minute on Saturday.

Three minutes into the second half, Cavani back-heeled Angel Di Maria, who fired a powerful shot outside the box for his fifth goal in last five games.

In other games, Bordeaux moved up to fourth place with a 2-0 home victory over bottom side Bastia, who also faced points deduction due to fans’ pitch invasion to attack their opponents in last weekend’s home encounter with Lyon. Lorient continued their good form in recent weeks to crush Metz 5-1 at home, tasting their fourth win in five matches and keeping a two-point margin above the relegation zone. IANS
