Psychotherapeutic professiols seek trained counselors

SHILLONG, Oct 1 8: The Trained Psychotherapeutic Professiols of Meghalaya (TPPM) today met state Health Minister Roshan Warjri on the need for trained counselors in Meghalaya, especially in education sector. During the meeting the TPPM submitted a memorandum to the state Health Minister. In the memorandum the “trained counselors” urged the State government to take a serious note of the importance of counseling and mental health. The TPPM pointed out that due to the increasing number of suicides’ cases there is a need to employ trained and qualified professiols who have the necessary qualification in counseling and psychology.  

The TPPM said that the stress levels are increasing on a daily basis and most students are uble to cope with such stresses in their lives.

“It should be mandatory that every public and private educatiol institution should provide the student with the necessary trained counseling help and guidance for their growth and mental health,” the TPPM said in the memorandum.

The “trained counselors” also said that it is important that the government review the already existing counselors in the state such as hospitals, ICTC’s, Schools, Health programmes to ensure that such people involved in conducting and facilitating the much needed counseling sessions are those that meet the criterion laid down above and are not simply under qualified individuals providing mediocre advice.

The TPPM also urged the government to take proactive step for the formulation of the new education policy of the state.

They said that the education policy should better define the term counselors and counseling and to also ensure that it should be those with psychological background.
