Tezpur/Biswath, Sept 12: Akin to the rest of the State, safety of women is a major concern in Sonitpur district as well, with disturbing statistics revealing the horrific picture that the State presents for its women.

The recent disconcerting incident at Balipara paints a grim and a shameful picture of law-and-order in the district. Despite stern vigilance mechanism and strict law and order, disorderly activities are prevalent. Sensation prevailed at Balipara recently in Sonitpur district following the assault on a female teacher of Kekukoli Primary School.

According to sources, Chimpy Saikia was serving as an assistant teacher in Kekukoli Primary School, Balipara and for the last few days, some rowdy boys were allegedly coming in the school premises and smoking cigarettes and talking loudly over the phone which obviously disturbed the academic atmosphere in the school.

While the female teacher approached the rowdy boys not to create any disturbance, she was allegedly threatened and assaulted in the school premises by one of the boys med Amir Ali. The situation worsened when the boy allegedly began to assault the teacher and used some abusive words in front of the headmaster. Surprisingly, though the incident took place in front of the headmaster of the school, he was a mute spectator. The headmaster did not take initiative to prevent such unethical activities in his school and even made no attempt to defend the female teacher.

The teacher called up the Balipara Block Education Officer and also her husband to rescue her. Later, her husband and two of his friends reached the spot and rescued her from the situation.

The teacher mentioned about the situation she had to face on social media and this led to a public outcry.

Meanwhile, police arrested Amir Ali of Chariduar for his alleged mental harassment of Chimpy Saikia who hails from Chatiya in Biswath district. Police arrested him on Tuesday based on the FIR lodged by the teacher in Chariduar Police Station.
