Purandia VCDC declared open defecation-free

TANGLA, Jan 19:  Open defecation and lack of sanitation and hygiene in general is an important factor for various diseases, most notably diarrhea and intestil worm infections.  The Government of India aims to achieve an open defamation free country by 2019. As a part of the mission, every State of India is putting efforts to fulfill the dream. The BTC government has already declared many areas under VCDCs as Open Defecation Free (ODF) zone.

Purandia VCDC under Khalingduwar BTC of Udalguri district has also been declared Open Defecation-Free. During a programme held on Thursday on declaration of Purandia VCDC as Open Defecation-free, BTC EM of PHE, Lmshraw Daimary, while attending the programme as chief guest, said hygiene and proper sanitation were important for good health. Daimari also said that he had already ordered all the officials of the department to complete the construction of toilets in villages of BTC before October of this year.

Sadha Hojai, Udalguri Deputy Commissioner, said that proper sanitation was essential for the people to remain healthy and to avoid various diseases. Bibhuti Ranjan Sarma, CHD PHE of BTC, said that he hoped to get an Open Defecation-free BTC under Swaccha Bharat Abhijan by the end of this year. The programme was organized by District Water and Sanitary Committee. Purandia VCDC consists of eight villages. Already 997 toilets have been built, 323 houses have their own toilets and 29 houses have the TSC toilets and 52 houses have received toilets under DRDA.
