PWD Engineer involved in fund misappropriation bbed

Bongaigaon, December 1: An alleged corrupt officer, who was hiding since the last four months, was filly bbed by Chirang district police on Tuesday.

Prasan Brahma, Assistant Executive Engineer of PWD in Chirang, was alleged to be involved in the Rs 1.5-crore scam of construction of a road in Palasguri area of Chirang district. He was bbed from Bengtol area of Chirang district today.

The local people of Palasguri first filed a complaint against this scam. This alleged scam came to their notice through an RTI report. “One of the villagers demanded some documents from the PWD through RTI, and from the reply we came to know that the PWD had already constructed the road in Palasguri on paper at a cost of Rs 1.5 crore. But the real picture is totally different. Not even a stone has been laid. Then we came to know that few officers of the PWD and some contractors  had pocketed all the money which had been allotted for construction of the road. The people of Palasguri immediately lodged an FIR in Sidli PS in this regard. We also complained to the district administration and investigation was started,” said a villager.

Before the arrest of Brahma, police had already arrested two persons allegedly involved in the scam, Amitav Sarma, Executive Engineer, PWD and a contractor med Kamal Basumatary. Another person, Jyotiprakash Musher, Section Inspector, is still absconding.
