Golaghat, February 16: India’s first war against the British rule was the Sepoy Mutiny in 1857. On August29, 1857, the revolt of the sepoys in the north-eastern region first started at Nogora in Golaghat for which the place is recognized as a veerbhumi or the land of the brave.

Nogora’s history came into light in the year 1979. The local people came forward to set up a war memorial where earlier the camp of sepoys had been set up near Nogora High School. With the help of local people and the district administration, the foundation stone of a war memorial was laid by the then-minister Prithvi Majhi. On Wednesday, the Sepoy Mutiny memorial monument will be unveiled by State PWD Minister Ajanta Neog.
