Railway Board Takes Decision On Rail Line To Majuli After Survey Reports

GUWAHATI: The Railway Board will take the final decision on executing the project on rail connectivity to Majuli after examining the ongoing survey reports.

While the Railway Board is expecting to receive the survey report on the rail line connecting Gogamukh-Dhakuakhana-Kamalabari-Garmur-Jorhat from NF Railway by September this year, the board has already received the survey report on rail connectivity between Harmuti and Majuli.

Additional Member (Works) of Railway Board Mukesh Kumar Gupta in a recent letter to former MP from Tezpur Ram Prasad Sarmah informed that a survey for the new line from Gogamukh-Dhakuakhana-Kamalabari-Garmur-Jorhat (100 km) was sanctioned in the Union Budget for the year 2017-18. He said another survey for a new railway line from Harmuti to the island via Bihpuria (38km) was sanctioned on February 21, 2017. “A survey route from Harmuti, Bihpuria, Majuli and Kamalabari is covered in the twin surveys,” Gupta said.

Gupta sent the letter to Sarmah on June 12, 2019 in response to the latter’s letter on February 4, 2019 requesting rail connectivity from Harmoti to Kamalabari via Bihupuria in Assam.

In 2016, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal urged the Ministry of Railways to construct a railway bridge connecting Majuli from Dhakuakhana in Upper Assam to expose the largest riverine island of the world and epicenter of neo-Vaishnavite culture to the whole world.
