Rainbow Alliance Will Defeat Congress: AGP President Atul Bora

GUWAHATI: The rainbow alliance of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) along with its other partners like the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), the Rabha Joutha Sangram Samiti, the Tiwa Jatiya Oikya Mancha, and the Sanmilita Ganashakti will definitely come out victorious in the Parliamentary polls in Assam, claimed AGP president Atul Bora while addressing a meeting to welcome former AASU (All Assam Students’ Union) vice-president Moni Madhab Mahanta along with thousands of his supporters who joined the regional party at the AGP headquarters here on Wednesday.

Later interacting with the media, Bora stated, “The prime objective of our tie-up with the BJP is to defeat the Congress which is our eternal enemy.”

He further said, “Our alliance is nothing new. We had a similar political understanding way back in 2001. Even during the 2016 Assembly polls, our rainbow-akin alliance won the people’s mandate. This time too we’re into that same political understanding. The purpose remains the same – to defeat of the Congress.”

Dwelling on some criticism over the AGP-BJP tie-up, Bora said, “A few persons are indulging in an anti-campaign against the tie-up, especially on the social media. But, majority of them are Congress supporters. Well, some other forces are active too. However, they too are silently carrying on this anti-campaign as supporters of the Congress.”

Further clarifying on the AGP-BJP alliance, Bora pointed out, “The decision to go for a political tie-up between the regional party and the BJP was taken by the party. It was not decided by one or two leaders of the AGP.”

On the strategy of the AGP, Bora added, “The younger generation and their leaders will be given importance. Suggestions will always be solicited from the founders, veterans and senior leaders of the party.

“Ours is a regional party. Party members and leaders, including the MLAs and the MPs, have always been highlighting issues of the State. Earlier, AGP MPs had also done it forcefully in the Parliament. The need of the hour is to again send MPs from the AGP to the Parliament. They will be accountable to the people of Assam.”

Talking to the media later, Moni Madhab Mahanta said, “The Kaliabor MP did precious little for the developmental of his constituency during the last five years. Hence, the people of the constituency have already decided to cast their votes in favour of the AGP.”

Meanwhile, sources informed that the AGP is likely to field Mahanta from the Kaliabor LS seat. He is the younger brother of AGP working president Keshab Mahanta. The Congress has already announced the name of sitting MP Gaurav Gogoi, son of former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, as its candidate from the Kaliabor Parliamentary seat. The election for this LS seat along with those of Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Lakhimpur, and Tezpur will be held during the first phase on April 11.
